What’s the Best Food Chart for Diabetes?
This is one of the first questions asked by a newly diagnosed diabetic or a new prediabetic. At Fodlist, when we started creating food charts and meal plans for diabetes, prediabetes, and other diets like FODMAP and low sodium back in 2021, we asked ourselves the same thing: what’s the best food chart we can offer?
The honest answer is that it’s been dynamically changing over the past five years, based on thousands of pieces of feedback from diabetics and prediabetics who bought our charts on Amazon, hundreds of other charts we analyzed — free and paid — and our own direct interactions with customers through email, messages, phone calls, and social media.
How We Built Our First Diabetes Food Chart
In 2021, we started with a simple diabetes food chart made up of four columns: the food name, the serving size, the glycemic index of the food, and its carbohydrate and calorie content per serving. Foods were categorized by food group, and everything within each category was organized alphabetically. That was it.
The format was a trifold laminated chart with an 8″ × 11″ unfolded size. We were the first to offer this kind of chart on Amazon, and sales took off. At first, we assumed the content itself was driving sales — and that was partly true. This was the first time a diabetic could find food data based on trusted sources like USDA data and CDC guidelines, organized in a clean, color-coded, easily accessible way, in a format like a laminated brochure you could use anywhere: grocery shopping, in the kitchen, on the street, on a plane, easily portable.
But once the feedback started coming in — Amazon reviews, customer questions, even emails — we started looking harder at the core content of the chart, and realized we were still missing some important pieces.
What We Got Wrong First: Completeness
The first wave of negative feedback was about incompleteness. Even though the chart covered more than 500 foods across different categories, we looked again and analyzed the objection more carefully. It turned out the issue wasn’t the number of foods — it was which foods were listed.
The chart was built for anyone, everywhere — but our target market was the United States and Canada, where eating habits are meaningfully different from the rest of the world. So when a US customer unfolded the chart and couldn’t find beans, quinoa, or beef, or found daikon listed instead of red radish, they reasonably concluded the chart was incomplete. From their point of view, it was.
We audited all 500 foods on the chart against what’s normally available in the US and consumed by the majority of American households, removed foods that didn’t fit, and added the ones that did. The results were encouraging: fewer refunds, more positive reviews, fewer negative ones. That was the first real step toward what we consider the perfect diabetes food chart. Then came the next objection.
Making the Chart Actually Practical
We took time to figure out why people still felt the chart wasn’t fully practical, even though most of the foods they’d look for were now there, along with the categorization and the numbers. Everything looked fine to us — but not to a newly diagnosed diabetic or prediabetic seeing it for the first time.
The first advice most people get after diagnosis is to eat more non-starchy vegetables, more lean protein, less carbohydrate, and stay within a healthy carb and calorie range. That information was technically already on the chart — it just wasn’t obvious. So our next job was to make that advice obvious and easy to apply at a glance. That’s when we introduced the “*” symbol for non-starchy vegetables, “LP” to mark lean protein foods, and a color-coding system for glycemic index: green for low GI, yellow for medium, red for high.
Once that was in place, the person using the chart no longer needed to study the numbers — they could just look at the color, pick the food, and move forward. That worked well for a while, until we ran into the next problem.
A Diabetes Chart Has to Evolve With You
We found that diabetics are constantly evolving in how they think about the food and dieting side of managing their condition — and a chart has to evolve with that. Two pieces of feedback in particular stuck with us. One was an Amazon review saying the chart “was missing the fiber part, which is vital for any diabetic.” The other was a phone call asking whether we were planning a version with glycemic load included.
That’s when we understood the current version was incomplete in a new way, and needed an update to keep up with how the diabetes-dieting world was moving. We went back to research and design, added glycemic load to the chart, and created a separate, dedicated high-fiber diabetes-friendly food list to close the fiber gap.
Adding Instructions People Could Actually Follow
We were cautious here — we didn’t want to undo the simplicity we’d worked toward by piling on more data and making the chart overwhelming. We wanted it to feel like a personal guide: something that tells you what to pick, what to eat, and how to eat it, the moment you open it.
So we added a “How to Use This Chart” section directly on the chart itself, explaining in plain language how and when to use it. We also added a short explanatory video for people who’d rather watch than read. That turned out to be one of the most appreciated additions we’ve made — but it still wasn’t the whole story.
Why Trust and Transparency Matter Most
If you can’t trust a doctor, you won’t follow their advice — you might not even ask for it, even if it’s free. The same thinking applies to diet charts and meal plans. When we first started making these charts, we were genuinely surprised by how many people were using unchecked, unverified charts from complete strangers online, either paid or free. We looked at some of them ourselves. At best, most were just short food lists sorting things into “eat” and “avoid.” Others were flatly wrong, or too impractical to use as a daily reference.
